making quesadillas certainly isn't rocket science, but this is definitely useful for people who don't do a lot of cooking or just really like quesadillas. there are a few things to watch out for:the cord is REALLY short (like less than 2 feet, and the manufacturer recommends AGAINST using extension cords) and the maker is relatively big, so on some crowded counters, trying to find a place to put this can be toughthe maker itself gets pretty hot, and there's only a small rubber spot on the lid to handle it by...and along with the cord issue, you have to be really careful that the lid doesn't touch anything when you open the maker because it will burn/melt whatever it touchesi had thought from the picture that the maker cuts the quesadillas...it doesn't, it just makes a little indentation that you have to cut yourselfit's kinda hard to get the quesadillas out of the maker...i was using smaller tortillas (10") than recommended, so maybe that was a factorclean-up can get tricky, so be sure to start wiping down while the maker is still warmall that said, again, it's a fun gadget and comes with some interesting recipes. but hardcore quesadilla lovers might prefer the old fashioned way of making them...on the stoveI was a little disappointed. I had delusions of grandeur that this device would create beautiful quesadillas that tasted great with a minimum of fuss and muss. Well, the quesadillas do taste great (but what's not to like about tortillas and cheese); however, I've yet to perfect the process without spilling melted cheese everywhere. Clean-up is relatively easy --- the non-stick surface cleans up well with a dry paper towel; but, clean-up would be even easier if you simply use a non-stick skillet instead. Is this device a cool novelty? Yes. Will it ultimately take up precious cabinet space and gather dust? Probably, but yet to be determined. My son loves it because he can help me make him his quesadilla, so I'm appreciative of this device's novelty. And I would admit that the quesadillas from this machine do come out quite nicely. All in all, I'm not unhappy with my purchase, but it didn't measure up to my high expectations. BTW, I recommend erring on using larger size tortillas --- you can fill it with more stuff and you have less spillage. After discounts and special pricing that particular day this quesadilla maker cost me $10. For $10 I cannot complain about it's performance. It pretty much does exactly what it says it does in the instructions. Unfortunately, it's not really spectacular at doing it. There's almost nothing to be done here - plug it in, wait for it to heat up, put down one tortilla, put fillings on top of the first tortilla, put the second tortilla down, close the lid, and wait for it to cook. What's wrong? Well, it's almost a guarantee that the fillings will leak out the sides, making a mess in the unit. The instructions list a maximum filling size of 1/4 cup, but I have found even LESS than will squeeze out the sides. And honestly, I find that 1/4 cup of ingredients (say... cheese only) does not make much of a quesadilla. So in conclusion - there's nothing WRONG with this unit, but be prepared for a mess if you want to make a quesadilla that has any decent amount of anything in it.I recently purchased this quesadilla maker and have been pleased with the results so far. It heats up quickly, and with a non-stick surface is easy to clean. There are a few downsides: the thicker you make the quesadilla (or the more ingredients you add) the machine does not perfom well. You'll have to put some pressure on the lid to get it to flatten out. We made quesadillas with cheese, sliced olives and sliced jalapenos and it required pressure to get it to cook. Making the quesadillas is messy, and after every quesadilla, the machine has to be cleaned. It does wipe up easily, but it still takes some time to clean up. For the price of this machine, all the negatives still make it a worthwhile purchase.Shelly, I have one of these and have never had a problem with mine opening up. Sounds like you may have a defective product, maybe you should have it exchanged.BTW I love my quesadilla maker. It is a shame you can only make one batch at a time. What I do sometimes is cut the quesadillas up with a pizza cutter then put them in the oven on low to keep warm. I made some for a Super Bowl party and they were a huge hit! I also bring my quesadilla maker over to a friend's house and we make a bunch for our families to eat, the kids love them.I've not made any desserts with mine yet, but I'd say if you use some sort of apple filling in between a couple of tortillas then sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, and maybe a little vanilla ice cream it would be very tasty.Well I put a whole on the top of the lid while using it for the first time. You have to push down on the rubber area so you can lock it in the front. If you push to hard the plastic area under the red rubber will give in. The first Quesadilla the I made I over filled slightly so that one made a mess. The others that were made came out better. Well worth the $18 that I paid for it. I would have given this 4 stars if it had not broke on the first try. It is worthy of 3.5 stars but I can not give a half a star on this rating system. I will edit my review to let you all know how Salton handel's the warranty issue once I contact them. When I got this as a gift, I wasn't sure what to think. However, I love it! I often use it to throw together a quick meal. Cleanup is a snap. I just wipe it down while it's still hot. Since it's non-stick, everything comes right off. Of course, I take care not to overfill it. Perhaps those who say it's hard to clean are putting too much filling in. I almost never have any leak out. I started by not putting enough filling in and gradually worked my way up to nice, full quesadillas.
