This has become our "go to" dinner when we're looking for something quick. Dump in a pot, add 6 cups of water, and cook for an hour. Simple, tasty, and healthy. For a little more flavor add a chunk of ham or bacon, and let it cook with the peas. Since we're older, and have health concerns with pork, we switched to smoked turkey. A drumstick or a thigh is the perfect size. This adds about a half hour to the cooking time for shredding the meat, but gives the soup a rich hearty flavor. If you start your cornbread at the same time you pull out the meat to cool (before shredding) they'll both be ready about the same time.As a native of Fresno, I can attest that the soup lives up to its name.
